Introduction

Structural engineering in Uganda follows both British Standards and the Eurocodes: BS 8110 and EN 1992 for concrete, EN 1993 for steel, and EN 1991 for actions. This framework sets the design criteria for residential, commercial, and institutional projects across the country. KAHL Consults Limited, a Kampala-based multidisciplinary consultancy, works within it. Its team of architects, engineers, surveyors, environmental specialists, and real estate consultants delivers innovative, sustainable, and value-driven solutions.

The practice is led by Eng. Happy Moses Were, a registered Civil and Structural Engineering Practitioner in Uganda and the firm’s Managing Partner. Over the years, KAHL Consults has supported several Turkish-led developments in Uganda, reviewing designs prepared to Turkish engineering standards and adapting them to Ugandan and Eurocode requirements. The team relies on ProtaStructure — itself a Turkish-built solution — for modelling and verification. That shared engineering ground between the two countries becomes an additional assurance for clients.

Discovery of ProtaStructure

KAHL Consults first encountered ProtaStructure in 2012, when engineers still knew it as Orion. The team was working with ETABS, SAP2000, and SAFE at the time, but wanted a single connected workflow that brought modelling, analysis, design, reinforcement detailing, and documentation into one environment.

After evaluating the software for some time, the firm purchased a genuine licence in 2019. The move gave the team technical support, regular updates, structured training, and access to the Prota user community. ProtaStructure is now the firm’s primary structural design platform, and Eng. Were regards it as one of his best professional investments.

Structural engineering in Iraq follows these codes: ACI 318, AISC 360, and ASCE 7 — the American concrete, steel, and loading standards adopted across many of the country’s residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Established in 2010, ArtPlan Consulting Bureau is a structural engineering consultancy delivering residential, commercial, and industrial projects within this framework across Iraq.

Since its establishment, the company has focused on adopting modern engineering technologies that improve design quality, increase productivity, and simplify coordination throughout every stage of a project. Project Case Study: Cooler Modification at Tasluja Cement Factory

One of the most challenging projects completed using ProtaStructure Suite was the Cooler Modification at Tasluja Cement Factory.

The project required upgrading an existing cooler section while keeping the original structure in place. Engineers had to accommodate a completely different cooler configuration and support significantly heavier loads without demolishing the existing structural system.

This presented several engineering challenges, including:

  • Working with an existing industrial structure
  • Integrating a new cooler system with a different configuration
  • Supporting substantially increased structural loads
  • Maintaining construction feasibility while minimizing disruption to plant operations

Using ProtaStructure Suite, the engineering team was able to develop an accurate structural model, evaluate different design alternatives, and produce the required steel detailing efficiently. The integrated workflow let the team move seamlessly from modeling to analysis and detailing without switching between multiple platforms, so project coordination became more efficient while manual drafting work was reduced.

Antrepriza Proiect, founded in 2019, provides structural design services for civil, industrial, and agricultural projects. The company focuses on modern tools and simple workflows to deliver fast, accurate, and cost-effective work.

Introduction

Antrepriza Proiect was created in 2019 to support a wide range of structural projects. Since that time, the team has adopted new software tools that make the design process easier to manage. As a result, the company can complete complex tasks with greater speed and clarity. This approach also helps improve coordination and overall project quality.

Discovery of ProtaStructure

The team began using ProtaStructure Suite in 2021. At that point, they needed a platform that would reduce long drafting and detailing hours. In addition, they wanted a full 3D environment that included modeling, analysis, reinforcement, and documentation in one place.

What impressed them most was the easy-to-use interface, along with the clear reinforcement tools. Moreover, the fast generation of formwork drawings and IFC models made coordination with other teams much smoother. These features also helped create a more organized workflow.

One of the company’s major projects is the Water Company Headquarters in Oradea. It includes several buildings with different structural and foundation systems. Throughout this work, ProtaStructure made it easier to create a clear and coordinated structural model.

The entire complex includes three main structures, each designed with its own structural approach.

Administrative Block

  • The foundation uses isolated elastic footings.

  • Reinforced concrete spatial frames form the superstructure.

  • The floor system follows an RC beam-and-slab layout.

 

Operations Block

  • The foundation combines elastic footings with rigid isolated supports.

  • The building uses reinforced concrete spatial frames.

  • RC slabs with closely spaced ribs provide better structural performance.

 

Technical Services Block

  • Foundation beams transfer loads to isolated supports.

  • The upper structure consists of reinforced concrete spatial frames.

  • Floors use an RC beam-and-slab system.

How ProtaStructure Helped Throughout the Project

ProtaStructure improved the workflow in several ways. First, the 3D model made it simple to review structural shapes and make quick adjustments. In addition, IFC exports supported smoother coordination with architects and MEP teams.

Furthermore, the parametric reinforcement tools helped reduce detailing time for key elements such as columns, beams, and slabs. As a result, the automated formwork and quantity reports shortened documentation time and ensured a consistent output across all buildings. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your company?

I am Mehmet Kara, a Civil Engineer (BSc 2005-2010 from Çukurova University, MSc 2019-2021 from Osmaniye Korkut Ata University) and an Electrical and Electronics Engineer (BSc 2012-2018 from Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University). I completed my master’s in geotechnical engineering and am now pursuing a PhD in the same field. Since 2010, I have worked in the construction industry, starting at our family company, founded by my father, a mechanical engineer, in 1997. This early experience helped me develop expertise in mechanical installations for building projects. Today, under the Karahanlılar Engineering brand, I manage my own firm alongside the family business, specializing in structural, electrical, and mechanical project design and contracting services. The buildings I designed withstood the Kahramanmaraş earthquake without damage. In addition to engineering, I am a certified real estate valuation expertand a specialist in agricultural technologies. I also have a passion for programming, working with C#, Java, C, and assembly, particularly in embedded systems architecture. Additionally, I developed a mathematical model related to human behavior, presented at a 2017 international conference co-hosted by Iowa State University and Gaziantep University.

I first heard about ProtaStructure during a seminar at the Chamber of Civil Engineers in Kahramanmaraş. At that time, Prota software was rarely used in my city, so I saw it for the first time at the seminar. What impressed me the most were the number of international users and the involvement of Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ). The fact that Turkish developers created the software was also a key factor for me. Mehmet Kara integrated ProtaStructure as his first and only structural analysis software.

Which features of ProtaStructure are the most useful for your projects? In what types of building projects or at which stages of the project process do you use the program?

ProtaStructure’s ability to analyze both steel and reinforced concrete structures in the same model makes it, in my view, one of the best programs in the world. Its modules are powerful enough to function as standalone programs. I find ProtaDetails especially useful for retaining walls, pools, and drawing capabilities. In my opinion, ProtaSteel competes directly with Tekla and excels in the steel structure domain. Although the program has room for improvement, it remains very strong compared to competitors. I mainly use it for complex buildings, which gives me a significant advantage in my region. Adding Prota’s steel module has allowed me to tackle projects that only I can solve. For smaller projects, such as simple steel stairs, consoles, or terraces, ProtaStructure has become indispensable.

Could you provide detailed information about one of your light steel structure projects, which you shared on LinkedIn? Learn how did Mehmet Kara integrate ProtaStructure and benefit from it during the different stages of this project?

After the Kahramanmaraş earthquake, the government introduced urban transformation loans, increasing construction activity. One approved building type used light steel elements. Due to this demand and Mehmet Kara integrating ProtaStructure with confidence, I took on these projects. While other firms used SAP2000 for light steel structures, I believed I could model and design them with ProtaStructure. The software allowed me to define and add the necessary light steel sections and create new ones. Although it lacked some design features, I fully trusted its analysis capabilities. With Prota’s technical support, I overcame all modeling challenges. The transparency principle of ProtaStructure, especially in reporting, helped me earn high marks from authorities. ProtaStructure’s ability to model reinforced concrete foundations with light steel structures in the same model is unique globally. The software also generates reports with load cases and MNT values for light steel structure elements, which I found highly useful. Hidden axes, the building analysis model, the ability to add new element sections, and defining cladding were the features I used most. ProtaStructure also helped me meet the required load combinations requested by the authorities.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

Gojko Jovanović, Senior Architect at MG Projekt, shares that adapting to new software for international codes and design standards can be challenging. However, with the help of the Prota Help Center and support tickets, we’ve discovered numerous tips and tricks to enhance our efficiency. The user-friendly interface has made it easy for us to quickly understand and effectively utilize the program’s features.

Despite encountering some challenges with the steel section, where joint details were not available in Serbian, I remain optimistic that the Prota software team will address this soon. The initial hurdles did not deter us from recognizing the immense potential of the software.
