Moreover, this innovative module\u2014which is the result of our dedicated work\u2014allows you to model reinforced concrete staircases interactively and seamlessly integrate them into the building model using a library of frequently used staircase types.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, by clicking on the \u201cStaircase\u201d command in the Modeling menu, you can add any type of reinforced concrete staircase to your building model by selecting one of the three methods offered and easily adjust the staircase loads. Furthermore, ProtaStructure also allows you to model staircases with finite element shell elements and include them in the building analysis model.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, detailed information about ProtaStructure\u2019s RC staircase module is provided in the attached document.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"353\" data-end=\"397\"><strong data-start=\"353\" data-end=\"395\">RC Staircase Module Liability and Intellectual Property<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"1240\">\n<li data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"783\">\n<p><strong>Limitation of Liability:<\/strong> Prota Software Inc. shall not be held liable for any losses arising from documentation errors, software defects or misuse. Moreover, future releases will expand the stair type library and introduce a \u201cDIY Stair Editor.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1715\"><strong data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1600\">Stair Placement Interface and Methods<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To begin, access the staircase command via <strong>Modeling &gt; RC Members &gt; Staircase<\/strong>. Subsequently, three placement methods are available:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"2057\">\n<li data-start=\"1716\" data-end=\"1796\">\n<p><strong>Area-Based:<\/strong> Select a region bounded by beams, shear walls or grid lines.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1797\" data-end=\"1910\">\n<p><strong>Two-Point Rectangle:<\/strong> Define the stair footprint by specifying two diagonal corners of a rectangular area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"2057\">\n<p><strong>N-Point Polygon:<\/strong> Outline complex or non-rectangular footprints by clicking successive points; terminate by re-selecting the initial point.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In each method, ProtaStructure then prompts for the target area prior to creation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2227\"><strong data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2166\">RC Staircase Module Supported Stair Types<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Currently, the module supports five stair configurations:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2760\">\n<li data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2288\">\n<p><strong>Straight:<\/strong> Connects two levels with a single flight.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2289\" data-end=\"2360\">\n<p><strong>Straight with Landing:<\/strong> As above, with an intermediate landing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2425\">\n<p><strong>L-Shaped:<\/strong> Straight flight plus landing with a 90\u00b0 turn.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2583\">\n<p><strong>U-Shaped:<\/strong> Two parallel flights with a 180\u00b0 turn; offers additional parameters (landing depth, width, thickness) and alignment options (inner\/outer).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2584\" data-end=\"2760\">\n<p><strong>U-Shaped with Two Landings:<\/strong> Two flights joined by dual landings, providing a full 180\u00b0 reversal\u2014optimal for constrained linear space or change-of-direction requirements.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 data-start=\"2762\" data-end=\"2849\"><strong data-start=\"2762\" data-end=\"2795\">RC Staircase Module Stair Parameters and Loads<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon creation or modification, users may specify the following parameters:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2850\" data-end=\"3419\">\n<li data-start=\"2850\" data-end=\"2913\">\n<p><strong>Z-Offset:<\/strong> Vertical adjustment of the stair\u2019s lower end.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2996\">\n<p><strong>Lock to Storey Height:<\/strong> Automatically match stair rise to storey elevation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3037\">\n<p><strong>Riser Count<\/strong> and <strong>Tread Width.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3038\" data-end=\"3111\">\n<p><strong>Flight Length:<\/strong> Auto-computed by default; user-override permitted.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3112\" data-end=\"3167\">\n<p><strong>Waist Thickness:<\/strong> Thickness of the stair soffit.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3253\">\n<p><strong>Alignment:<\/strong> Position the stair within the selected area (left, center, right).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3307\">\n<p><strong>Reverse Direction:<\/strong> Flip the ascent direction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3419\">\n<p><strong>Dead Load<\/strong> and <strong>Live Load:<\/strong> Uniform area loads applied as additional dead (G\/D) or live (Q\/L) loading.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3420\" data-end=\"3497\">\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Additionally, the self-weight of the stair is calculated and applied automatically.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"3499\" data-end=\"3594\"><strong data-start=\"3499\" data-end=\"3531\">Stair Editor View Options<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To enhance modeling efficiency, the stair editor provides the following view options:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"4207\">\n<li data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3818\">\n<p><strong>Show Analytic:<\/strong> Toggle between the physical model and pseudo-analytic view to visualize analytical line connections. <em>Warning:<\/em> This is not a full analysis mesh; the true FE model is generated during global analysis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3997\">\n<p><strong>Show Rebars:<\/strong> Display reinforcement placement in 3D, based on ProtaStructure\u2019s rebar engine. <em>Caution:<\/em> This feature is in development and may not reflect final detailing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3998\" data-end=\"4042\">\n<p><strong>Show Axis:<\/strong> Display the project grid.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4043\" data-end=\"4207\">\n<p><strong>Show Reference Drawing:<\/strong> If an architectural reference drawing is loaded on the active storey, it appears beneath the stair geometry to aid accurate placement.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"4209\" data-end=\"4252\"><strong data-start=\"4209\" data-end=\"4250\">Editing Stairs and Assigning Loads<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"4253\" data-end=\"4632\">\n<li data-start=\"4253\" data-end=\"4368\">\n<p><strong>Modify Stair:<\/strong> Select a placed stair, then right-click <strong>Properties<\/strong> to reopen the editor and adjust parameters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4369\" data-end=\"4632\">\n<p><strong>Load Assignment:<\/strong> In the editor, specify additional dead or live loads. These are automatically assigned to the corresponding load cases. Custom vertical and lateral cases may also be defined; however, only temperature and uniform area loads are applicable to stairs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"4634\" data-end=\"4796\"><strong data-start=\"4634\" data-end=\"4674\">Finite Element Modeling of Stairs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Importantly, ProtaStructure models stairs exclusively with FE shell elements as integral components of the building analysis mesh.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4797\" data-end=\"5576\">\n<p><strong>Warning &amp; Disclaimer:<\/strong> Inclusion of stairs in the building analysis is debated. Because stairs connect two levels, they may introduce lateral restraint. Consequently, some engineers opt to exclude stairs from the analysis mesh\u2014and design lateral systems as though the stairs are absent\u2014to capture worst-case behavior. Furthermore, stairs may crack or yield under seismic load and should not be relied upon for lateral resistance.<br \/><strong>If you do not intend to analyze stairs within the global model, do not model them here.<\/strong> For standalone stair design and detailing, use the ProtaDetails stair module. Additionally, when stairs abut shear walls, ProtaStructure assumes a monolithic connection. In practice, anchorage lengths may be insufficient; to simulate this, model a small gap between the stair and wall.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"5578\" data-end=\"5786\"><strong data-start=\"5578\" data-end=\"5629\">Integration of Slabs into the Building Model<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Moreover, a slab meshing option exists under <strong>Building Analysis &gt; Model Options &gt; Slab Model<\/strong> to mesh floors for direct load distribution or diaphragm behavior. Regardless of this setting, stairs are always meshed. If slabs remain unmeshed while stairs are meshed, ProtaStructure attempts to support the stairs\u2014but for a more realistic model, mesh slabs in the global analysis. In scenarios where beams or shear walls support the stairs, slab meshing is optional, provided you verify analytical connectivity.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6138\" data-end=\"6376\"><strong data-start=\"6138\" data-end=\"6167\">Stair Design Workflow<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As described above, stairs are modeled as FE shells and integrated into the global analysis. Consequently, ProtaStructure automatically extracts critical results for each stair component and generates slab strips for design.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2308\">Additional Resources<\/h3>\n<p>For additional guidance or technical support, please contact Prota Software Inc.
