In the real world a concrete building has to be constructed in stages \u2010 typically one floor at a time. Depending on the number of storeys within the building a significant period of time can elapse from the commencement of first floor to completion of the top floor.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\"> Because concrete matures with time, this means that at the top floor the concrete has properties which \u2018lag behind\u2019 those of the first floor (and to a reducing degree each intermediate floor).<br \/><\/span><\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">Another aspect of the staged nature of concrete construction is that any settlement of existing lower floors which takes place prior to the pouring of the current floor is allowed for on site when establishing the current floor level. This effect can not be allowed for in a standard 3D analysis, however it is catered for automatically in a staged construction analysis.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Simple_Example\"><span class=\"colour\">Simple Example<br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">A model consisting of two blocks is constructed as shown below. The first floor plan and loading is identical in both blocks. A second floor framework is added to the right hand block but with no imposed load applied to that level.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n \n<\/div>\n<div>\n <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=9n3vj972675616f4b4565858762b87ad8e9fd\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n \n<\/div>\n<div>\n <span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">A standard 3D analysis can be performed for the above, in which all members are analysed simultaneously with all the loads applied.<\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/><\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n A staged construction analysis can also be performed. If the option were selected to stage the imposed load only, the analysis would proceed as follows:<\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/><\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc\"><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">In the first stage, only the first floors are analysed for their imposed load.<\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc\"><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">In the second stage, the second floor is added and the analysis repeated (for the undeformed model) but this time only for the imposed load at second floor level.<\/span><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: disc\"><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">In this way, each stage can only affect the result in it\u2019s own and previous stages.<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Results_for_Q_-_Unstaged\"><span class=\"colour\">Results for Q &#8211; Unstaged<\/span><br \/><\/h2>\n<div class=\" align-left\" style=\"text-align: left\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=9n3vjaf9f5fc3eea248b29e50585981d1b35f\"><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\"><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"highlight\">\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n <span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">In the unstaged result you can see that Q load applied at first floor is causing moments to develop in the structure above. If that frame existed when the load was applied then this is completely logical.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Results_for_Q__Staged\"><span class=\"colour\">Results for Q \u2010 Staged<\/span><br \/><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=9n3vj2a44415c161c4ecb9f08ba12b8b7be89\"><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">In the staged result no moments develop in the frame above the first floor members and in fact the forces in the first floor structure are identical in the single storey frame and the two storey frame. This is logical if all the load is applied before the frame above exists AND assuming that all deflection is instantaneous.<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><span style=\"margin: 10px 0px;position: relative;padding: 10px 10px 10px 40px\" class=\"KB_New_Editor_Highlights\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-b42de9d8b77841c20f4247548fc62f8c.png\" data-type=\"non-resize\" style=\"position: absolute;left: 12px;top: 14px;width: 15px;max-width: 100%\" data-image=\"contentStyle\" alt=\"Notes\"><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n  <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n   <span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">The effect of creep is not considered in the above \u2010 in reality the first floor beams would&nbsp;continue to deflect and the joints continue to rotate after the frame has been built and loaded.&nbsp; Therefore, although there are no moments in the second floor frame at the point at which it is&nbsp; constructed, the creep of the first floor structure should cause some moments to develop over&nbsp;time in the second floor.<\/span><\/span>\n  <\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Model_Creation\"><span class=\"colour\">Model Creation<br \/><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n  <span class=\"size\" style=\"font-size: 16px;line-height: normal\">No additional steps are required when creating a model for staged construction. Stages are created automatically, (each storey being treated as a separate stage).
