<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Genera<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">l tab&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Use <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">delZ<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> input in the Beam Properties &gt; is recommended as it is easy and straightforward to cater for minor change in elevation, e.g. toilet drops.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">&quot;e-z&quot; changes the elevation <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">graphically<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> (visual purposes) <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">without<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> affecting the elevation of the&nbsp;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">analytical wire<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;of the member (analysis purposes).&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"margin: 10px 0px;position: relative;padding: 10px 10px 10px 40px\" class=\"KB_New_Editor_Highlights\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-b2c39ac8c4a98e65c20e5a1252a8ecf8.png\" data-type=\"non-resize\" style=\"position: absolute;left: 12px;top: 14px;width: 15px\" data-image=\"contentStyle\" alt=\"Notes\"><\/div>\n<div><b><span class=\"colour\">Method 2 <\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&quot;<b>delZ<\/b>&quot; can be used if the change in level is significant to warrant a corresponding change in the analytical model.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">&quot;delZ&quot; changes both the elevation&nbsp;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">graphically&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">and&nbsp;elevation of&nbsp;the&nbsp;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">analytical wire<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;of the member.<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">We will discuss and compare the assumption and results of these methods using a simple model. &nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"Method_1__Use_e-z_input_in_the_Beam_Properties\" class=\"toc_anchors\"><span class=\"colour\">Method 1 : &nbsp;Use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"><b><span class=\"colour\">e-z<\/span><\/b><\/span><span class=\"colour\"> input in the Beam Properties<br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">In the example model below, all the 3 beams in the right hand side are lowered (dropped) by 300mm. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-e3803577258ac3f5317f04fc06dbfd17.png\"><\/div>\n<p><span><span class=\"colour\">This is done by accessing the <\/span><\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Beam Properties <\/span><\/b><span><span class=\"colour\">&gt;<\/span><\/span><b><span class=\"colour\"> General<\/span><\/b><span><span class=\"colour\"> tab :<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span class=\"colour\">e-z <\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">= -300mm<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span class=\"colour\">h <\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">= beam depth = 500mm<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div><span class=\"KB_New_Editor_Highlights\" style=\"margin: 10px 0px;position: relative;padding: 10px 10px 10px 40px\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Notes\" data-image=\"contentStyle\" style=\"position: absolute;left: 12px;top: 14px;width: 15px\" data-type=\"non-resize\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-b2c39ac8c4a98e65c20e5a1252a8ecf8.png\"><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><b>e-z<\/b>&nbsp; value must be less than <b>h<\/b>, depth of the beam. Hence if the beam depth is 500mm, then the maximum absolute value of e-z can only be 499mm.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">If the drop or raise level is equal or more than the depth of the beam, then <b>delZ<\/b>&nbsp;method must be used (discussed later).&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">The slab is lowered by the same amount by entering&nbsp; <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Rel. Level<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;= -300mm in the Slab Properties.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">Run building analysis and access the<\/span> <b><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.protasoftware.com\/portal\/en\/kb\/articles\/post-analysis-ps-2022#Display_Analytical_Model\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Analytical Model&nbsp;<\/a><\/b><span class=\"colour\">to examine the analytical wire-frame and results (as shown below) :<\/span><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"original\" class=\"docsimage\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_4330760435844261\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%;width: 768px;height: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-669d6233eda060c82f8214e6a4d1c522.png\"> <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">The analytical wire frame elevation of the lowered beams remains at the same elevation (no change).<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">The slab rigid diaphragm (grey lines) is created in the same floor plane and will constrain all the beams including the \u201clowered\u201d beams as expected.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">This means that all beams cannot shorten, elongate or bend in the plane of the slab and hence there will be no axial force, minor bending or minor shear in all the beams for all load cases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><span class=\"KB_New_Editor_Highlights\" style=\"margin: 10px 0px;position: relative;padding: 10px 10px 10px 40px\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Info\" data-image=\"contentStyle\" style=\"position: absolute;left: 12px;top: 14px;width: 15px\" data-type=\"non-resize\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-013f0b49ecc9b7f43bf3696b8ea9be77.png\"><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><b>Method 1 Conclusion<\/b> <br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">This is the recommended method as it is the easy and straightforward when the change in beam elevation is minor.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"colour\">For this reason, <\/span><b>e-z<\/b><span class=\"colour\"> value is restricted to be less than the depth of the beam.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"Method_2__Use_delZ_input_in_the_Beam_Properties\" class=\"toc_anchors\"><span class=\"colour\">Method 2 : &nbsp;Use delZ input in the Beam Properties<br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">Using the same model, the beams can be lowered using the alternative <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">delZ<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> method.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-231095c2c48796e490df9f41cba3beeb.png\"> <\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">This is done by accessing the <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Beam Properties<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> &gt;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\"> 3D<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> tab :<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span class=\"colour\">delZ -I <\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">= -300 &nbsp;(means lower the left end elevation of the beam by 300mm)<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span class=\"colour\">delZ -J =<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> -300 (means lower the right end elevation of the beam by 300mm)<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">The slab is similarly lowered by the same amount by entering <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Rel. Level<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> = -300mm in the <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Slab Properties<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">. Also, option &quot;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Apply Z to Analytical Mode<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">l&quot; in ticked to ensure the slab diaphragm is dropped analytically.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">Run building analysis and access the<\/span>&nbsp;<b><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.protasoftware.com\/portal\/en\/kb\/articles\/post-analysis-ps-2022#Display_Analytical_Model\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Analytical Model&nbsp;<\/a><\/b><span class=\"colour\">to examine the analytical wire-frame and results (as shown below) :&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-31ac5cc3db197fa75367be17449a2c13.png\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\"><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">The analytical wire frame elevation of the lowered beam is considered (lowered by 300mm).<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Rigid link (<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">dark blue<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">) auto-created at the drop location, resulting in increase of stiffness at this beam column joint.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Separate slab rigid diaphragms (grey lines) are created because option &quot;<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Apply Z to Analytical Model<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&quot; in ticked&nbsp;in slab properties.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">The slab diaphragm will constrain the beams in the same plane to prevent any axial forces, minor shear or minor bending forces from developing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><span class=\"KB_New_Editor_Highlights\" style=\"margin: 10px 0px;position: relative;padding: 10px 10px 10px 40px\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Info\" data-image=\"contentStyle\" style=\"position: absolute;left: 12px;top: 14px;width: 15px\" data-type=\"non-resize\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-013f0b49ecc9b7f43bf3696b8ea9be77.png\"><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\"><b>Method 2 &nbsp;Conclusion<\/b> <\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">At first glance, this method seems to be more accurate.
