There are two purlin insertion methods; <b>Insert Using Two Members<\/b> or <b>Insert Using Multiple Members<\/b>.<br \/><\/span><\/span><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-c367e3cc3a69af9767ba773b5fd1b510.png\" style=\"max-width: 100%;height: auto;padding: 0px\"><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;line-height: 1.7;list-style-type: decimal\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;To&nbsp;<b>Insert Using Two Members<\/b>, select the first truss or frame member followed by the second one&nbsp;where the purlins will be inserted. Intermediate trusses\/beams\/frame members will be automatically detected. In order to consider purlins as simple beams, there should not be any intermediate trusses\/beams. They are important if you want to design the purlins within ProtaStructure.&nbsp; &nbsp;Purlins are usually cold-formed members and the design of cold formed members is out of scope of ProtaStructure.&nbsp; Hence, if you do not intend to design purlin within ProtaStructure, then there is no need to insert sag rods.&nbsp; In addition,&nbsp;<span>sag rods will increase the size of the model considerably if there are many purlins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h1 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Edit_Purlins\"><span class=\"colour\">Edit Purlins<\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;line-height: 20px\"><span style=\"line-height: normal\" class=\"font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">To edit purlins:<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;Select the existing purlins, right-click and select &quot;<\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">Properties<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">&quot;.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">&nbsp;Edit according in Geometry or Loads dialog, and click&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><i><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">OK<\/span><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size: 16px\" class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h1 id=\"Assign_Loading_on_Purlin_using_Cladding\" class=\"toc_anchors\"><span class=\"colour\">Assign Loading on Purlin using Cladding<\/span><br \/><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">It highly recommended to model a roof cladding on the purlins and insert roof area loads on the cladding.&nbsp; Refer to :<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/support.protasoftware.com\/portal\/en\/kb\/articles\/working-with-claddings-8-7-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Working with Claddings<\/a><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"colour\">The area loadings from the cladding will automatically be calculated onto the purlins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<h1 id=\"Assign_or_Verify_Loading_on_Purlin_using_Edit_Load\" class=\"toc_anchors\"><span class=\"colour\">Assign or Verify Loading on Purlin using Edit Load<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div><span><span class=\"colour\">You can verify and directly insert loads on the purlins using Edit Load function.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"original\" class=\"docsimage\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_1693320010104411\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/prota-doc-4445aa79978521db1d7efa95df974a3d.png\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span class=\"colour\">Select purlins &gt;&nbsp; click<\/span><b><span class=\"colour\"> Edit Loads<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> in the purlin top ribbon. (Alternatively, right-click &gt; click on <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Edit Load)&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span class=\"colour\">Ensure that the load case selected is correct.<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span class=\"colour\">Click on the load type that would like to assign on purlins. <\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span class=\"colour\">Enter preference loading magnitude.<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: decimal\"><span class=\"colour\">Click on one purlin or more.
