{"id":33735,"date":"2026-04-27T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T13:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/technical-manuals\/structural-modelling\/how-to-model-slanting-inclined-beam\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T12:37:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T12:37:45","slug":"how-to-model-slanting-inclined-beam","status":"publish","type":"wiki","link":"https:\/\/protasoftware.com\/wiki\/how-to-model-slanting-inclined-beam\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Model Slanting Inclined Beam"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">When a beam is modeled, it is by default created horizontally at the top of the active storey in view. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">The elevation of the beam can be changed using the <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">del z<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> boxes for each end of the beam in the <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">Beam Properties<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> &gt; <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">3D <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\">tab.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Method_1__Input_delZ_manually_in_Beam_Properties\"><span class=\"colour\">Method 1 :&nbsp; Input delZ manually in Beam Properties<\/span><br \/><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">With reference to the table top model below, when a beam is created <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">delZ \u2013 I<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> (left end) and <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">delZ -J<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n (right end) defaults to 0.&nbsp; Hence the top of the beam is in the same<br \/>\nhorizontal plane as the top of the storey (which is also the default top<br \/>\n of slab).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_6057924925928178\" class=\"docsimage\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%;width: 741px;height: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=lzf1zaa038c2956464b1abdcbefb9c614acac\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">A positive value of <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">delZ<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> will raise the beam end while a negative value will lower it. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">For<br \/>\n example, if delZ- I = 500 and del Z -J = -1000, the left end will be<br \/>\nraised 500mm and the right hand will be lowered by 1000mm.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_5231615857239524\" class=\"docsimage\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%;width: 744px;height: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=lzf1z6141b4b7d98a4c858cb305cf10c82fff\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">Looking<br \/>\n at the 3D physical model, it is not entirely clear if the left end of<br \/>\nthe beam is still connected to the column. The only way to verify the<br \/>\nconnectivity of members is to run <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">Building Analysis<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> and then go to the <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.protasoftware.com\/portal\/en\/kb\/articles\/post-analysis-ps-2022#Display_Analytical_Model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Analytical Model<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\">to investigate the analytical model (as shown below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=lzf1z6ec884f6aa3f4e45bee369a6d15c2671\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">As shown above, the analysis automatically extended the height of the column by creating a<\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\"> <\/span><span class=\"colour\">rigid link<\/span><span class=\"colour\"> <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\">(dark<br \/>\n blue line). This is because the depth of the beam is 500mm and the beam<br \/>\n end is raised by 500mm, hence the bottom of the beam end technical<br \/>\nstill meet the top of the column. Hence, the analysis intelligently<br \/>\ncreated this rigid link to connect the column and beam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">Alternatively, if in doubt, you can raise the top of the column by the same value by using the <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">delZ \u2013 top<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> box in the column properties (as shown below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"best\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_14311224996545646\" class=\"docsimage\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%;width: 520px;height: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=kr8xq88805372e9f54f30acf3bcdbb4f3dc47\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Method_2__Using_insertion_points_in_the_3D_view\"><span class=\"colour\">Method 2 : Using insertion points in the 3D view <br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">It is also possible to create a slanting beam by clicking on the smart points along the column length in the 3D view :<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">With the beam properties out, hover the mouse cursor along the column.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Select \/ Input the 1<\/span><sup><span class=\"colour\">st<\/span><\/sup><span class=\"colour\"> end of the beam using any of these methods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Insertion points (red smart points) will appear at <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">0L, 0.25L, 0.33L, 0.5L, 0.66L, 0.75L &amp; 1.0L<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Hold down the <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">CTRL<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"> &amp; the insertion points will be available at a&nbsp;length step of 100 mm (can be adjusted in <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Settings<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\">&gt; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/support.protasoftware.com\/portal\/kb\/articles\/general-settings\"><span class=\"colour\">General Settings<\/span><\/a><span class=\"colour\">).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Press<\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\"> F2<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"colour\"><br \/>\n while an insertion point is visible will allow you to manually input<br \/>\nthe exact distance from the top of the column &gt; <\/span><b><span class=\"colour\">Input value<\/span><\/b><span class=\"colour\"> &gt;<br \/>\npress <\/span><strong><span class=\"colour\">ENTER<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span class=\"colour\">Select \/ Input the 2<\/span><sup><span class=\"colour\">nd<\/span><\/sup><span class=\"colour\"> end of the beam&nbsp; (see below example)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-zdeskdocselectedclass=\"\" data-zdeskdocid=\"img_37925555314578485\" class=\"docsimage currimg\" style=\"padding: 0px;max-width: 100%;width: 650px;height: auto\" src=\"https:\/\/desk.zoho.com\/DocsDisplay?zgId=672206093&amp;mode=inline&amp;blockId=kr8xq81b5af5eca6e48ccb4a67d7d61924a0a\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc_anchors\" id=\"Method_3__Using_Plane_function\"><span class=\"colour\">Method 3 : Using Plane function <\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">This<br \/>\n method can be used to model inclined beams which are supporting slabs. Using the plane function, all elevation of members can be forced to<br \/>\nalign with the plane.<\/span><span class=\"colour\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"colour\">This method must be used to model inclined \/ slanting the slab.
